Lola.com Co-founder and CTO Paul English Presented with Honorary Doctor of Science Degree from UMass Boston
Paul English, Well Known as Co-founder of KAYAK and Extensive Philanthropic Work in Boston and Globally, Earns 3rd Degree from UMass Boston
BOSTON – May 31, 2019 – Paul English, co-founder and CTO of Lola.com, the Agile Travel Management™ company that provides a super simple way to manage, book, and report on business travel, received an honorary doctor of science degree at the University of Massachusetts Boston on Friday, May 31, 2019. He was honored at the university’s 51st commencement ceremonies, 30 years after earning his master’s degree from the institution. He also has his bachelor’s degree in computer science from UMass Boston. In addition to being well known as CTO of KAYAK, a travel company he cofounded in 2004, took public in 2012, and then sold to Priceline a year later, he conducts extensive philanthropic work in Boston and globally.
“I’m a CTO at heart who loves building product, and I’ve been fortunate to do just that in the city I love,” said English. “UMass Boston gave me a solid foundation for building a tech career that has allowed me to pay it forward in my philanthropic work in Boston and around the world. Thank you for recognizing me with this honorary degree. I am proud to now hold three degrees from this fine institution.”
English is co-founder of Summits Education, an organization that is building education systems in rural Haiti. Summits operates a network of 40 schools in Haiti’s Central Plateau, employing more than 350 educators and serving 10,000 students. He is also director of Partners In Health and Village Health Works, both organizations providing quality healthcare to populations of extreme poverty.
In 2017, English launched King Boston, a privately funded project working closely with the City of Boston and the Boston Foundation to create a new memorial and programs honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Coretta Scott King and their time and work together in Boston. The project has raised more than $6 million.
English is also the founder of GetHuman, a service created to give consumers excellent customer service at any company, Boston Light, a small business ecommerce start up that he sold to Intuit, and Intermute, sold to Trend Micro. He is the subject of Tracy Kidder’s book, “A Truck Full of Money,” a mesmerizing portrait of a kinetic and unconventional inventor and entrepreneur, who as a boy rebelled against authority while growing up in working-class Boston.
